the lateral field. The basal layer, averaging 0.5 /~m in thickness, has vertical striations with a periodicity of approx. 0.025 /~m. At the edges of the lateral field this layer becomes forked and is replaced, under the field, by two obliquely oriented fiber layers (Fig. 3), each of which appears to be composed of many fibrils. A thin, often discontinous electron-transparent zone separates the striated basal layer from the underlying hypodermis. Beneath the cuticle is a membranebound hypodermis and basal lamella similar to that reported for M. incognita by Baldwin and Hirschmann (1). The observations reported here for M. hapla males are in agreement with those of Bird (2) and Baldwin and Hirschmann (1) for M. iavanica and M. incognita, respectively. The cortex could be resolved into the same five layers as observed by Baldwin and Hirschmann (1) in M. incognita. The author (unpublished data) has also observed these five layers in the cuticle of M. javanica males. The cuticle structure of M. arenaria (Neal) Chitwood males is also similar (Johnson, unpublished data). I t appears Ultrastructure of M. hapla: Johnson 233

Tolerance Limit of the Sugarbeet to Heterodera schachtii.
Field and greenhouse experiments showed that yield losses of sugarbeet, Beta vulgaris, did not occur in soil infested with fewer than eight Heterodera schachtii eggs/g soil. However, larger population densities greatly reduced sugarbeet yield. In the field experiment, the yield in microplots inoculated with more than 64 eggs/g soil was less than 20% of yields in uninoculated microplots. Neverth...

(75% at p H 7.2 and 0 at p H 5.7 and 8.7). In our tests at 0.005 M concentration, host survival was 86-92% at all p H values, and no correlation was evident hetween host survival and pH. Many factors such as salinity, temperature, and pol lut ion can affect the efficiency of R. culicivorax. Although lower p H values appear to enhance the ability of the preparasi te to infect a host, p H is prob...

Background and objective Transferring injured people to medical centers is one of the important challenges of providing relief in natural and man-made disasters. Often, due to the damage caused by the disaster, it is not possible to transfer the injured to safe medical centers in the short term. Establishing field hospitals in suitable places is one of the common solutions in these situations. ...

متن کاملA micrometeorological method for in situ denitrification measurements using acetylene inhibition
A method for acetylene inhibition measurements of denitrification in the field using micrometeorological techniques is presented. It is based on the monitoring of flux ratios from small (<5 m2) microplots. The method measures concentration profiles close to the surface, and from these the ratio of gradients, which can be assumed to be equal to the ratio of fluxes, is calculated. Acetylene has b...
